Don’t Wreck The Holidays

Northwest Iowa — The holiday season is known for celebrations and traditions, but unfortunately it’s also known for being the deadliest season when it comes to drunk and drug-impaired driving.

Iowa Law Enforcement across the state is partnering with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration this holiday season to remove impaired drivers from the roads and help save lives. Iowa State Trooper Kevin Krull tells us about the “Don’t Wreck The Holidays” enforcement effort.

Trooper Krull says authorities aren’t trying to tell you not to celebrate and enjoy yourself, but instead to enjoy yourself in a responsible manner.

Krull says his hope is that nobody has to see his red and blue lights flashing in their rear-view mirrors this holiday season. He says he’d be perfectly happy to not have to pull anybody over.

From December 13, 2018 to January 1, 2019 Iowa law enforcement officers arrested 506 impaired drivers. Also during that time frame in Iowa there were 17 fatal crashes that claimed the lives of 18 people. And four of those 17 crashes involved an impaired driver.

The “Don’t Wreck The Holidays” enforcement period began December 13th and will continue through January 1st.
