Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon firefighters were summoned to 501 Normal College Avenue, East Elementary School for a fire alarm at 8:37 Thursday morning.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Brad Hindt, the alarm was in the Children’s World area. Hindt says all the kids had exited the building and where taken to another school building.
He says firefighters found a faulty sensor in Children’s World.
The fire department was back in service at 9:30 Thursday morning.
East Elementary Principal Jason Groendyke informed the parents of East’s students with the following email message.
“East Elementary wanted to make each of you aware of an incident that occurred this morning. At approximately 8:26 this morning our fire alarms were triggered and our staff did an amazing job with following our evacuation procedures and was able to get each student evacuated in a safe and timely manner. Since we were unaware of why the alarms went off and the amount of time the elementary students would be standing outside the decision was made to have the elementary students head over to the high school. The fire department did arrive on scene and checked out East Elementary and Children’s World buildings (as our systems are tied together). A sensor was found at Children’s World that had condensation, leading it to trigger the alarms. The fire department was able to take care of this and the sensor will be replaced tomorrow. At approximately 9:15 the fire department was able to give us an all clear. East Elementary and Children’s World students were bused back to their respective buildings.”
