Former Plymouth County Sheriff’s Deputy Who Was Found Guilty Of Burglary And Theft Has Prison Sentence Suspended

Le Mars, Iowa — A former Plymouth County Sheriff’s Deputy who was sentenced to 40 years on burglary and theft charges, and later had that dropped to 15 years, has now had all prison time suspended from his sentence.

Iowa Third District Judge Steven Andreason had ruled that 44-year-old Aaron Leusink was improperly represented and did not receive a fair trial. Leusink was arrested in April 2020, for the theft of prescription drugs from two Plymouth County pharmacies, the sheriff’s office evidence locker, and other places.

He pled guilty to 11 charges in 2022, began serving that sentence, and later filed the appeal saying he had received ineffective counsel. He then entered a plea agreement and was ordered to serve a 15-year prison sentence.

But last month, he filed a request for reconsideration. The court agreed to the reconsideration and ultimately ruled that the prison sentences should be suspended. The rest of the terms of his sentence remain in effect.
