Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon High School Football Field is planned to be switched from grass to artificial turf.
Sheldon High School Athletic Director Eric Maassen spoke to some Sheldon business leaders about it on Thursday. He tells us more.
He says it would be a benefit to the community, especially as it relates to NCC.
He says those games would also mean more economic activity in Sheldon as people are coming to watch the games and potentially staying in hotels, buying meals, fuel, and more.
Maasen tells us that the main benefit engineering-wise of artificial turf over natural grass is how it wears.
He says he’s also been asked about the possibilities of injury with an artificial turf field.
Maassen tells us the total cost of the project is estimated at $1.2 million. He says fundraising continues, with about $700,000 raised so far. He says they’re reaching out to businesses for donations. Maassen says the fundraising will continue through the fall, and they plan to talk about it at an upcoming football game. As far as the timeline, he says they hope to break ground in the spring of 2022 and have it done in time to play football in the fall of 2022.
