Sheldon, Iowa — A sitting Sheldon City Councilman tells KIWA that he intends to seek appointment as Mayor of Sheldon.
Councilman Greg Geels currently serves as an At-Large member of the Sheldon City Council but told KIWA Monday morning that he has informed City Manager Sam Kooiker that he intends to submit a Letter of Interest in being appointed Mayor of Sheldon.
Geels joins a trio of other Sheldon residents who have already submitted Letters of Interest in becoming Sheldon’s next mayor. The three are Fred Grein, Wayne Barahona, and Robert Engel. The City has been seeking Letters of Interest in the position for the past few weeks. They intend to interview those who’ve expressed an interest, followed by appointing one of the individuals as mayor during next week’s city council meeting.
Should Geels be appointed mayor, the Council would then have to find a replacement to assume the At-Large position on the Council that he currently holds.
The appointment of a new mayor became necessary with the resignation of former Mayor Katricia Meendering who resigned to become General Manager of the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center.
