Sheldon, Iowa — It’s still called Glen’s Sport Center, but it is no longer owned by Kelly Jongerius and family. However, he still works there.
That was the news reported recently. Since then, we’ve had a chance to talk to Jongerius about the business and the decision.
He tells us the business started in the mid-1960s when his dad, Glen, bought a bicycle shop from a widow whose husband had owned one in Sheldon.
For those of us who don’t remember, Glen’s used to be in the building that until recently housed Gordon’s Shoes and Shirts at the corner of Business 60 and Ninth Street.
Jongerius tells us that his dad had the business for sale — for the right price — for several years. But now that he’s going to be 63 next month, it seems to make sense.
He says customers shouldn’t notice too much change with the new ownership. All the staff is staying on, and will be working for the new owners, which are also the owners of Van’s Implement in Hull. He says it’s a family business.
Jongarius says he has a message for their customers.
Glens Sport Center is just north off of Highway 60 at exit 31 in Sheldon, on Business 60, and they continue to serve customers six days a week.

Original story, posted Friday, October 1st at 2:57 p.m.:
Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon store that’s been in business for over 56 years is changing hands.
Kelly Jongerius of Glen’s Sport Center tells us they have sold their business to the folks that own Van’s Implement of Hull. He tells us the transaction happened on October 1st. Glen’s Sport Center, Incorporated ceased to be on Friday, says Jongerius.
He tells us, however, that the entire staff, including Jongerius himself, is staying on and will work for the new company, and the name will not change.
Jongerius says Glen’s was closed this Friday and will be closed this Saturday as well so they can work on the ownership transfer, reorganization, and meetings. He says they’ll continue in the same location and will sell the same brands.
According to Jongerius they will open again Monday morning with the same hours as before, and will still be called Glen’s Sport Center.
