Gun Control Group Holds Protest At Iowa Capitol

Des Moines, Iowa — Teenagers involved in March for Our Lives Iowa are calling on the Iowa Senate to reject a bill, SF 543, that would allow guns in parking lots outside schools.

Hannah Hayes, a junior at Des Moines Roosevelt High School, is one of the students who led a rally of about 50 people at the statehouse.

The bill was passed earlier this month by the House. The bill modifies the current law allowing firearms on school property under certain circumstances. It allows an individual that has a valid permit to carry weapons, or is a retired peace officer that retired in good standing, and met other requirements to carry a pistol or revolver, provided it is concealed. The individual must be at the school for specifically listed reasons, and under certain conditions.  It also mandates that if the weapon is left in a vehicle unattended, the vehicle is required to be locked.

The crowd marched in the Iowa Capitol’s rotunda for about an hour.
