High School Law Class Becomes CSI Unity Christian

Orange City, Iowa — The Law class at Unity Christian High School in Orange City recently took part in what School Resource Officer Deputy Waylon Pollema of the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office called CSI Unity Christian.

Deputy Pollema tells us about the crime the class investigated.

He says the students also learned that, unlike television CSI episodes, real criminal investigations don’t get wrapped up in 60 minutes.

Pollema says the kids also learned about the level of proof needed to make an arrest.

He says the class really got into solving their mock crime.

In addition to the activity, the law class also was able to attend a recent murder trial at the Sioux County Courthouse. They also had the opportunity to have the Judge as well as both the prosecuting and defense attorneys involved in the murder trial speak to them.

Sheriff Dan Altena and Captain Jamie Van Voorst came to their classroom and give them an administrative perspective on these types of investigations; the students had some great questions for them, according to Deputy Pollema.

He says he does this type of class each year. Previous classes have been for students in the Boyden-Hull and Western Christian High Schools.
