Huizenga Sworn In As Sioux County Sheriff

Orange City, Iowa — There’s a new sheriff in town — literally.

On Friday, January 2, 2026, Former Chief Deputy Nate Huizenga was sworn in as Sioux County Sheriff.

The new role for Huizenga and the Sheriff’s Office comes after Jamie VanVoorst retired mid-term from the position of Sioux County Sheriff on December 31st.

Sheriff Huizenga says he is grateful for this opportunity and looks forward to continuing the high standard of law enforcement services the citizens of Sioux County expect and deserve. He says he is both honored and humbled by the strong support shown by the dedicated staff of the Sheriff’s Office and their partner agencies. Huizenga says he remains committed to strengthening our community through engagement, open communication, and collaboration as we move forward through this leadership transition.

Huizenga is a lifelong resident of Sioux County, having been raised in Orange City. He has served with the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office since 2001, including more than a decade as Chief Deputy from 2013 until his appointment as Sheriff. In addition to his law enforcement service, he served as the Sioux County Emergency Management Coordinator from 2009 through 2025. Huizenga and his wife, Leslie, reside in Orange City and are the parents of three adult children.
