Iowa Has Most Patriotic Place Names Of Four States In Region

Sheldon, Iowa — As we prepare to celebrate the 4th of July, we’re looking at which area states have the most patriotic names. It’s a little contest that our news partner, KELO Radio decided to do.

Hands down, Iowa had the most names of cities or counties in the four-state region that had “liberty,” “union,” or “independence” in them. In Iowa, there’s New Liberty, North Liberty, West Liberty; West Union and Union County; and Independence.

Nebraska was a distant second, with the towns of Liberty and Union.

Minnesota has a town called Independence, and a Union township.

Of course, South Dakota has Union County, which KELO says was named for Union sentiment after the Civil War.

Our sources were databases from the U.S. Census Bureau and Wikipedia.

Thanks to our news partner, KELO Radio for this unique story.
