January 2021: Warmer And Wetter Than Normal

Sheldon, Iowa — January, 2021 was a warmer, wetter month than the previous January, according to official National Weather Service observations.

January of this year saw an average high temperature of 30-degrees, compared to 26 the previous January. That 30-degree average high temperature reading was also five degrees warmer than the normal average high of 25-degrees. The warmest high recorded in Sheldon for January, 2021 was 46-degrees, which was recorded on January 14th. There were a total of three days in January this year when the mercury topped out above 40-degrees.

January 2021’s average low temperature in Sheldon was 16-degrees, which is 5-degrees warmer than the average low temperature of 11, which we saw in January 2020. The average low for January 2021 was 16-degrees which is a full 12-degrees warmer than the average low temperature for January.

During the month of January 2021 we saw 0.97-inches of precipitation in Sheldon, compared to 0.92-inches the previous January and compared to the average January precipitation of 0.65-inches. We had 6-inches of snowfall in January of this year, compared to 10-inches in January 2020. Average normal snowfall amounts for January are 6.4-inches. The biggest snowfall day in January 2021 was recorded on January 24th, when 1.75-inches of snow fell on Sheldon.
