Sheldon, Iowa — This January was a fairly normal one as temperatures go, but it was significantly drier than a normal January.
Our warmest temperature for January, 2022 was 50-degrees, which was recorded on January 12th. Average high temperature for the month was 27 degrees, which is within a couple of degrees of the average normal January high temperature of 25 and 3 degrees cooler than last year’s January high temp of 30. The coolest high temperature this January was 1-degree, which was recorded January 2nd.
The January, 2022 lowest temperature was reached on five different occasions. We saw the mercury dip to minus-9 on January 6th, 7th, 21st, 25th and 26th. The warmest low temp for the month was recorded January 13th, when the mercury only got down to 27-degrees. The average low temperature for January this year was 1-degree, which is slightly below the average January low of 4-degrees, and well below the coldest temperature of January, 2021, which was 16.
January, 2022 saw well below normal precipitation, with just 0.49-inches of precipitation, 0.16-inches below normal January precipitation amounts. There was a pronounced decrease in snowfall, as compared to a normal January. We saw just 4.5-inches of the white stuff during the month of January. That’s 1.9-inches below the normal of 6.4-inches.
