Judge Dismisses Judicial Nominating Commission Lawsuit

Statewide Iowa — (RI) — A Polk County judge has thrown out the lawsuit against the changes to the process used to nominate judges.

A group of Democratic lawmakers challenged the change that gives Republican Governor Kim Reynolds authority to name another member to the 17-member commission that nominates candidates for openings on the Iowa Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.

Democrats argued it allows a political majority on the commission. Judge Sarah Crane, who was appointed by Reynolds, agreed with the state’s argument that the case should be thrown out because the lawmakers are not harmed directly by the new rules. The Democrats say they will appeal to the Supreme Court.
