KIWA/SCDC All-American Blood Drive Collects 39 Donations

Sheldon, Iowa — Folks at the Community Blood Bank are happy with the blood drive totals at Tuesday’s All-American Blood Drive that happened at KIWA Radio in Sheldon.

Lauri Hoffmann, Program Coordinator at the Community Blood Bank says, “Thank you for a terrific blood drive! There were 39 total donations, helping 117 local patients. We appreciate your commitment to Community Blood Bank.”

Community Blood Bank Executive Director Ken VerSteeg tells us that when a person chooses to give blood, they potentially will save up to three lives. (39 x 3 = 117) He explains that the blood is separated into components of platelets, plasma, and red blood cells. Each of the components has the potential to be transfused to a local patient requiring one of the specific products. Trauma patients will use up to 50 blood components throughout their healing process, a heart surgery patient will use up to 6 units of blood, and a cancer patient could use up to 100 units of blood through their treatment.

Volunteer blood donors can donate blood every 56 days and provide hope 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Another blood drive at KIWA is planned in September.
