Large Group Speech Coming To Sheldon Saturday

Sheldon, Iowa — This Saturday, January 20th, Sheldon’s high school and middle school will be bustling with students, teachers, and parents from around northwest Iowa, when Sheldon hosts Large Group Speech Contest.

According to Sheldon High Speech Teacher Jodi Grant, there will be ten area schools represented, in addition to the Orab speech students. Grant says Sheldon is planning to have fifteen entries, comprised of sixty-three students, competing at the contest.

Grant says volunteers are still needed to help at Saturday’s contest, including announcers, time-keepers, and door monitors. She says they also need to fill the concession stand with workers all day. In addition, Grant says they’ll need donations of food to sell at the concession stand, so the Orab Speech Department can make money rather than spend it.

She says other jobs will include welcoming schools in the morning as their busses arrive, and manning donation tables in the entrances of the high school and middle school buildings.

Anyone wanting to volunteer to help at the contest is asked to call Jodi Grant, or Lissa Lane-Johnson at Sheldon High School.

Grant says community members are welcome to come out and watch performances throughout the day on Saturday. She says there is a $3 donation fee at the entrance to the contest. She says centers will be running from 8 or 9 Saturday morning until about 3 or 4 Saturday afternoon, depending on the center.

Students will be competing in the categories of One-Act Play, Choral Reading, Reader’s Theatre, Ensemble Acting, Musical Theatre, Group Improvisational Acting, Group and Solo Mime, Radio Broadcasting, Television News Casting, and Short Film.
