Learn About Beekeeping At NCC, Starting This Week

Sheldon, Iowa — The interest in beekeeping in northwest Iowa is on the rise. And you can find out how to be a beekeeper at a class starting this week at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon.

Experts say they have seen interest in bees rise in recent years as more news comes out about the disappearance of honeybees and the negative effect that losing pollinators could have on agriculture.

You can learn the basics of beekeeping — from what equipment is needed, to hive components, to the establishment and care of a colony. Included in the registration fee is the cost of a “First Lessons in Beekeeping” book. The instructor is a retired teacher turned hobby beekeeper.

The class costs $69, and will meet on Mondays, starting this Monday, January 21st and running through February 4th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on the NCC Campus in Sheldon, Room C304.

You can register online at www.nwicc.edu or by calling NCC at 712-324-5061.
