Learn About The Civil War Era In First Person At PHC Program Thursday

Sutherland, Iowa — A very special program is planned this Thursday at the Prairie Heritage Center near Sutherland. You’ll get to hear what the Civil War era was like from an actor who does it all first-person.

Charlene Elyea from the Prairie Heritage Center tells us more.

The speaker’s name is O.J. Fargo.

The program is entitled “Just Before the Battle Mother- A Visit from a Civil War Soldier.”

The audience is encouraged to ask questions and engage in a dialogue with the “soldier” who will stay in character. The speaker will bring along a full roster of all men who served in and from Iowa in the Civil War to enable the participants to check for ancestors who served.

Elyea says Fargo dresses in full Union Army regalia for the presentation and focuses the presentation on an individual soldier’s experience.

She tells us that Fargo has done more than 100 history presentations throughout the state including historical societies, libraries, schools, professional organizations, and many other groups.

The program is made possible via Humanities Iowa.

It’s free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information, you can contact the O’Brien County Conservation Board at 712-295-7200. The Prairie Heritage Center is located at 4931 Yellow Ave, between Sutherland and Peterson on Highway 10, and then a little north on Yellow Avenue.
