Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Welcomes New K9 Officer

Rock Rapids, Iowa — You may see a new face when a Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy stops you. But this one is a face of the canine, not the human variety.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office lost a K9 officer earlier this year.

According to Lyon County Sheriff’s officials, K9 Rizzo passed away on February 18th. They tell us K9 Rizzo began her career at the sheriff’s office in March of 2016 and faithfully served until the day before she passed away.

Lyon County Deputy Kyle Munneke says he is excited to welcome K9 Versa as his new partner. Versa comes to the sheriff’s office from Slovakia and was born in July 2020. Versa was purchased through a grant from the American Kennel Club and the United States Police Canine Association. This fall, Deputy Munneke, and K9 Versa completed their certification course through North Iowa K9.

They tell us K9 Versa can be used in multiple situations since Versa is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and evidence recovery.
