Sheldon, Iowa — We experienced a wide variation in temperatures during the month of March 2019.
At the KIWA studios in downtown Sheldon, we recorded an 81-degree swing from the warmest day in March to the coldest. The warmest high temperature recorded in March was 66-degrees on March 28th, while the coldest low temperature was 15-degrees BELOW zero.
All in all, however, March was cooler than the average months since records were kept. In a normal March we’d expect to see an average high temperature of 43-degrees, this year we were 7-degrees cooler than the average at 36-degrees. Our average low temperatures for March were colder than average, as well. In March 2019 our average low temperature was 19-degrees, some 3-degrees cooler than the normal average of 22-degrees.
While March 2019 was slightly cooler than normal, it was somewhat less snowy than average. 7.4-inches of the white stuff fell on Sheldon during March of this year, that’s 1.3-inches below the normal March, when we see 8.7-inches of snowfall.
In addition to snowfall, we collect data on the total precipitation to fall each day in Sheldon. Precipitation is calculated by the amount of rain that falls, plus the amount of moisture contained in the snow we receive. Total precipitation in Sheldon in March this year was 3.79-inches, that’s 1.83-inches ABOVE the normal March precipitation of 1.96-inches.
