Maurice Daycare Provider Convicted Of Child Endangerment, Assault

dianna-winderMaurice, Iowa — A Maurice daycare provider will face sentencing on January 9th following her conviction on Child Endangerment and Assault charges.

Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle says 33-year old Dianna Marie Winder, of Maurice, was convicted in Sioux County District Court Friday,  November 18th, for the crimes of Child Endangerment Causing Bodily Injury, a Class D Felony, and Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor.

Kunstle says the case originated from an incident on November 11th of last year, when the 15 month-old child victim was in Winder’s day care.  Kunstle says that around 5:00 PM that day the child’s mother picked up her son, and according to Kunstle it was immediately apparent the child had marks on his face.  During a brief discussion of possible causes, Ms. Winder stated she “promised she didn’t hit him”, according to Kunstle.  The mother took her son to the emergency room, where medical professionals examined the child.  Kunstle says that the medical professionals were concerned, and contacted police and social workers.  Winder was arrested in late December of last year.

According to Kunstle, Winder pled not guilty, and the case proceeded to a four-day jury trial November 15-18, 2016. This past Friday, November 18th, at 7:15 PM, the jury returned a guilty verdict on both counts.

Winder’s sentencing date has been scheduled for January 9, 2017, at 11:00 AM, in Sioux County District Court in Orange City.
