Mayor Resigns, Post To Be Filled By Council Appointment

Sheldon, Iowa – Sheldon Mayor Katricia Meendering has the dual distinction of not only being Sheldon’s first female Mayor, but also the longest-serving Sheldon Mayor, having held the post since 2009.

At last week’s City Council meeting Meendering tendered her resignation from the Mayor’s position to accept an offer to become General Manager of Sheldon’s Crossroads Pavilion event center. KIWA talked to City Manager Sam Kooiker and asked him what happens now.

Kooiker says the appointment process will be used, unless a sufficient number of Sheldon voters want to fill the Mayor position at the voting booth.

With the Council opting to appoint a new Mayor to serve until this fall’s election, Kooiker outlined the process of selecting a Mayor.

Mayor Meendering’s resignation is effective March 6th, and Kooiker says her final duty as Mayor will be to call the March 6th Council meeting to order.

As of Monday afternoon, the City has received one letter of interest in the Mayor’s position. To find out how to apply, CLICK HERE.
