Storm Lake, Iowa — A man accused of murder in Cherokee County this week was released the next day after posting a steep bond.
Authorities tell us 66-year-old Richard Hammond put up the $100,000 cash or surety bond on Tuesday, less than a day after he was incarcerated. He’s accused of running over a Sutherland man in rural Cherokee and leaving the scene.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office charged Hammond with 1st degree murder. Court documents allege he drove into the driveway of a residence east of Cherokee, where Christopher Wheeler of Sutherland was working on a truck, running over him. He then attempted to run away.
Wheeler died of the injuries despite the efforts of first responders.
Hammond is scheduled to appear in Cherokee County District Court on Wednesday.
