Sheldon, Iowa — The paperwork is now in place to display an archeological item found in Sheldon earlier this year.
DGR Engineering employee, Justin Blauwet, discovered a woolly mammoth tooth at a construction site on property owned by Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC), on Friday, March 4, 2022. Following the discovery, the Paleontology Repository Instructor at the University of Iowa, Tiffany Adrain, confirmed the nature of the find. Sheldon Public Works Director Todd Uhl and Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker suggested that the tooth, which belongs to NCC, be displayed at the Sheldon Prairie Museum.
The college and the Sheldon Prairie Museum have drawn up a memorandum of understanding, which was signed recently by the NCC Board of Trustees. NCC President, Dr. John Hartog III says that the document reads, “Since NCC is the public college for all of its communities, the Administration recommends that the tooth be displayed in the Sheldon Prairie Museum as a semi-permanently loaned artifact. For the foreseeable future, the College will house this artifact in the Sheldon Prairie Museum so that everyone from across our service area can come to the museum to see and appreciate it. The College will retain ownership of the tooth, and it will continue to display it at the College for special occasions.”
