NCC Sports Shooting Team Wins First Competition

Sheldon, Iowa — The Northwest Iowa Community College Thunder Sports Shooting Team debuted a strong start in their first ever trap shooting competition.

In their historical first competition of a collegiate sport, NCC took on the Lakers Sports Shooting Team from Iowa Lakes Community College on Wednesday, April 24 at Sportsman County Park in Cylinder. The NCC Thunder Sports Shooting Team out-shot the Lakers in the dual 234 to 225.

In Men’s competition, ILCC’s Tom Kotewa claimed top honors by breaking 50 clay birds. Austin Chase and Dylan Wunschel, both of NCC, each broke 49.

In the Womens division, NCC’s Kaitlyn Bechler broke 44 to claim top honors, with RaAnn Krull of ILCC breaking 41, and ILCC’s Tiegan Huntley broke 39.

Team scores found NCC taking top honors with 234, with ILCC breaking 225.

NCC is currently recruiting students for the 2019-2020 Sport Shooting season. Brian Lauck, NCC Head Sports Shooting Coach, says the college is interested in talking with high school students who were active in their high school sports shooting team and are interested in continuing to compete while furthering their education. At this time there are not scholarships available, but the participants’ ammunition, targets, and range fees are paid by the College — so many of them perceive this as almost like a scholarship, according to Lauck.

If you are interested in joining the fastest growing sport in the nation, with over 3,000+ sports shooting participants just in the state of Iowa, consider NCC’s Sports Shooting Team. For more information contact Brian Lauck, Head Sports Shooting Coach at nccsportshooting@nwicc.edu
