Sheldon, Iowa — Northwest Iowa Community College’s Health Information Technology and Medical Coding Programs have been selected as the some of the best in the United States by BestHealthDegrees.com.
In their study, NCC’s Health Information Technology program was ranked #2 in the Nation for online Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) and the Medical Coding program was ranked #3 in the Nation for a Diploma program. The Medical Coding program is the first year of the two-year Health Information Technology program.
According to BestHealthDegrees.com website the Best Degrees editors researched accredited, trusted programs of all kinds. From their initial pool, they ranked programs according to price, accreditation, reputation, and salary potential, using data from IPEDS and Niche, U.S. News and World Report, and other higher education rating publications.

Health Information Technology is a two-year program that combines organizational and analytical skills with an interest in healthcare. A Health Information Technician plays a vital role in making our healthcare system work. They perform data collection and analysis needed by doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The Health Information Management (HIM) program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). As a graduate, you will be eligible to take the national certification examination leading to the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential.
Medical Coding is a one-year program (the first year of the Health Information Technology program). Medical Coders assign a code to each diagnosis and procedure by using classification systems books and software. The classification system often determines the amount for which healthcare providers will be reimbursed. Coders may use several coding systems in a variety of healthcare settings. Students in the online medical coding program will learn the necessary skills to apply codes, submit bills, and communicate with other healthcare professionals.
