NCC’s LLRC Presenting Advice For Healthy Living This October

Sheldon, Iowa — Because October is Iowa’s Healthiest State Month, the folks at Northwest Iowa Community College’s Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center are passing along advice for healthy living.

The facility’s director, Dr. Greta Giese tells us what they’re trying to do.

(as said:) “Help people find ways to incorporate healthy habits into their daily lives and so each week in the month of October the rec center and also lots of organizations across the state of Iowa are posting tips and tricks for a variety of healthy habits.”

She tells us about one of the focuses of the effort.

(as said:) “Encouraging everyone to try to get one hour of physical activity each day. We really should be getting at least a hundred and fifty minutes of exercise or physical activity each week as adults. And so if we can try to work up to that one hour of physical activity daily we’ll really see great benefits to our health. “

Of course, eating healthy is part of getting healthier too.

(as said:) “Encouraging everyone to eat five servings of fruits or vegetables each day. So finding ways to incorporate more of those healthy fruits and vegetables — fresh fruits and vegetables — into our daily eating habits.”

Giese says they are not only talking about things to do, but also things to avoid.

(as said:) “Encouraging individuals to spend two hours or less of recreational screen time each day, and that can be a challenging one. So finding ways to put down the phone, put down the tablet, and maybe pick up a game with your family, or increase that hour of physical… increase up to that hour of physical activity instead of spending that recreational screen time.”

She says that many people know that healthy eating habits are part of living healthier, but so is drinking healthy beverages.

(as said:) “Working on zero sugary drinks. We really need to be drinking more water. And we spend a lot of calories and sugar content on drinking sugary drinks like pop and sugary coffee drinks and the like.”

Giese says if we can focus on those things, we’ll be well on our way to living healthy. For more information, you can check out the LLRC on Facebook. Just search for “@nwicc.llrc” on Facebook or Twitter.
