Lyon County, Iowa — Nearly ninety projects from around the tri-state area have submitted applications to win one of fifty grants of up to $2000 from the Lyon County Riverboat Foundation.
According to the foundation board’s president, Jerry Keizer, in an effort to get back to normal routines, the foundation recently wrapped up the application period for the seventh round of Mini-Grants.
Keizer says the foundation received 89 applications. He says 50 of the applicants will
receive up to a $2000 award to complete a small project, which adds up to nearly $100,000 in total funds. He tells us the awards ceremony will be held on April 19th at Grand Falls Casino and Golf Resort starting at 6:00 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, followed by a ceremony of awards at 7:00 p.m. Keizer tells us that Mini-Grant applicants must be present in order to win.
According to Keizer, unlike their other competitive grant process, which is merit-based and decided by the board, Mini-Grant winners are determined by random selection.
The projects are from many different communities both in and outside of Lyon County. Several are from Sioux Falls, there are some from southwest Minnesota, and some from other counties in northwest Iowa.
The Lyon County Riverboat Foundation is the non-profit license-holder for Grand Falls Casino & Golf Resort near Larchwood. As such it receives a certain portion of the casino’s take, which it gives out in grants to government subdivisions and to non-profit projects.
