Officer Nellis Sworn In During Sheldon Council Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — Some of the highlights of Wednesday’s Sheldon City Council meeting were discussion of a proposed short-term Emergency Services Task Force, changes to Sheldon EMA leadership, and the oath of office for a new full-time police officer.

City Manager Sam Kooiker says the perspective task force  would look at what emergency services Sheldon provides, how it’s provided and how it’s paid for. Included would be facility and capital improvements review, ordinance review, organizational structure, staffing, rural/township services, fees and funding. Kooiker says the task force would be a recommending body to the City Council. No action was taken at Wednesday’s meeting.

In other action, the Council accepted the resignation of EMA Director Mike Davis and named a replacement. Mayor Greg Geels…

City Manager Sam Kooiker then explained the reason for Barahona and Giese being named Interim Director and Assistant.

Sheldon’s contingent of full-time police officers is back to eight, after the newest officer, Shane Nellis, took his Oath of Office from Mayor Geels during Wednesday’s meeting.

Nellis has served the Sheldon Police Department as a reserve officer since September of 2020. He joins the department’s full-time contingent replacing retired police officer Rob Hegenbarth.
