Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Department’s new aerial ladder truck is on schedule for delivery late this month. That’s the report City Manager Sam Kooiker gave to the City Council at their regular meeting Wednesday afternoon.
The Council approved the purchase of the new $1.066 million dollar aerial ladder truck this past July. It will replace the department’s former aerial ladder truck, which was heavily damaged in an accident early last year. In the interim, the department has been leasing a used truck, with the City’s insurance carrier covering the cost of that lease up to $100,000.
During Wednesday’s meeting, the Council approved Amendment #7 to the Amended and Restated Urban Renewal Plan. Kooiker says that action helps establish a funding source for the new east side water tower and $400,000 in additional street work.
The City’s Bonding Agent, Scott Stevenson attended the meeting, and talked about the impact of bonding for the water tower. It was suggested that the City temporarily skip the acquisition of additional land in the crossroads addition, which would free up money to establish a bond with an up-front balloon payment. That would mean that the City would pay $1.4 million dollars of the cost next year, making the total bond amount $3.5 million, lowering the City’s bond payments.
The Council ended their meeting in closed session to discuss litigation matters. No action was taken following that closed session.
