No Tax On Clothing And Shoes Friday And Saturday

Statewide Iowa — The annual Iowa Sales Tax Holiday is this Friday and Saturday, and you could save some money if you take advantage of it.

State officials tell us it runs all day Friday and Saturday, until 11:59 p.m. Saturday night. They say it’s always on the first Friday and Saturday of August. It covers clothing and footwear, and no sales or local-option tax is collected. While it’s often referred to as a no-sales-tax “weekend,” it does not continue through Sunday — it is Friday and Saturday only. At midnight early Sunday morning, normal sales tax rules go back into effect.

Officials tell us there are a few stipulations about buying items free from taxes during the two-day event. It covers items that cost less than $100. There is a detailed list on the Iowa Department of Revenue’s web site.

A few examples of items in the gray area that may confuse shoppers: Jewelry is taxable. But bow ties, boots, bowling shirts, and uniforms are not.

Officials remind us that although the Sales Tax Holiday is timed to coincide with back-to-school shopping, school supplies are NOT included, and are TAXABLE, as usual.

The legislature passed the sales tax holiday bill in 1999.
