Not Much Chance For Freezing Rain In Northwest Iowa, But We’ll Probably Get Rain & A Little Snow

Northwest Iowa — We’re trying to keep up-to-date on what is in store weather-wise in the next few days and into Easter weekend.

As of the latest update, it now appears the vast majority of precipitation for those of us in northwest Iowa will be in the form of rain, but we still can’t rule out the possibility of some snow, sleet, or a wintry mix early Friday.

The National Weather Service says the icing threat will be greater the further north you go into southwest Minnesota, especially along and north of Interstate 90. A winter weather advisory has been issued for those areas from 10:00 p.m. this (Wed.) evening until 6:00 p.m. Thursday. This includes locations such as Windom, Marshall, Slayton, Fulda, St. James, Redwood Falls, and Mankato. At this point, the southern tier of counties, where cities such as Luverne, Worthington, and Jackson are — are NOT included.

We’re told rain amounts could be quite significant. We could get an inch to an inch and a half in northwest Iowa, which would certainly be welcome in light of the extreme fire danger we’ve been experiencing recently.

If you have travel plans into extreme northern South Dakota, southern North Dakota, and west central Minnesota, the vast majority of the precipitation in those locations will fall as snow, with upwards of a foot possible by late Friday. At last report, winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories were forecast for many counties in Minnesota and the Dakotas.
