October 2020 Cooler, Drier Than Normal

Sheldon, Iowa — The month of October was cooler than usual in Sheldon. We received much less than the normal precip, but coincidentally MORE than the normal snowfall.

According to the weather facts collected by KIWA Radio, the highest high was 84 degrees, recorded on both October 7th and October 12th. The lowest high temperature was 25 degrees, recorded on the 27th.

The lowest low in the month was 9 degrees on both the 26th and the 27th. The highest low was 50, on October 11th.

The average high for the month was 54. The normal is 62. The average low was 30. The normal is 38. The average temperature as-a-whole for the month was 42 degrees, and normally it’s 50.

We received only 0.88 of an inch of precipitation for October. A normal October sees over double that amount, with 1.92 inches, so we were below normal for the month by 1.04 inches. Year-to-date precip has been 17.15 inches. Normal year-to-date precip would be 25.64, so we’re 8.49 inches below normal on the year. The day with the most precip was October 26th when we received 3 inches of snow, with about three-tenths of an inch of precip.

The snow received in October added up to 3.2 inches. Normal snowfall for October is about eight-tenths of an inch, so we ended the month 2.4 inches above normal. Since September first, since we had ZERO snow in September, we’ve received just that same 3.2 inches. Normal would also be that 0.8 of an inch, so we’re also 2.4 inches above normal for season-to-date snowfall. The day with the most snow was the same date as the date with the most precip — October 26th, when we received that 3 inches of snow.
