Sheldon, Iowa — A man who you might say has become a “fixture” at the landfill south of Sheldon will be retiring soon.
We talked to Larry Oldenkamp, who is the manager of the Northwest Iowa Area Solid Waste Agency & Recycling Center — more commonly just called “the landfill.” He tells us he has had two “tours of duty” with the agency.
He tells us the landfill is a government agency.
He tells us what he does each day.
Oldenkamp says many things have changed since he started years ago.
He tells us that before landfills, many communities had a town dump. And in many communities, they just open-burned their garbage.
Oldenkamp says he is looking forward to having more time to do the things he wants to do.
According to Oldenkamp, he has also done a couple of other jobs throughout the years.
He has a few words of advice for people just starting out.
Oldenkamp tells us the landfill has hired a search firm to replace him. He says they hope to have a new manager hired by March. He says he’ll probably stick around a while to help the new manager get on their feet, unless someone with a lot of landfill experience is hired, in which case that probably won’t be necessary.
