Pavillion Is Venue For Child Abuse Awareness Conference

Sheldon, Iowa — People will be finding out more about child abuse and what can be done to prevent it, at a conference being held at the Crossroads Pavillion Event Center in Sheldon this Thursday, April 19th.

We talked to Cindy Warntjes, who is the president of FLAC, the “Family Life Awareness Council,” which is the child abuse council for Osceola and O’Brien counties, and she tells us about the conference.

She says adults who have experienced four or more “ACEs” — that is Adverse Childhood Experiences” are more likely to have problems as adults.

She tells us about the other reason that they are holding a conference.

Warntjes says there will also be booths that highlight other children and family services and resources available in the area.

She says while the conference is aimed at providers, law enforcement, educators, and administrators, everyone is welcome to the event. However, credits are available through Sanford Sheldon. She says community support is extremely important for children. In a nutshell, she says the conference is to bring awareness to child abuse and spread awareness of the resources available so that if there are issues, people know where to turn.
