Northwest Iowa — The second half of your 2019-2020 property taxes was due in March. But as part of one of her coronavirus proclamations, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said that penalties were not going to be imposed. If nothing changes, that expires in less than two weeks.
The proclamation stated that while property taxes were still due by March 31st, additional late interest and penalty on unpaid property taxes could not be imposed during the duration of the proclamation. But that proclamation is set to expire June 25th at midnight, according to Lyon County Treasurer Russ Hopp.
But Hopp tells us the situation is still fluid — meaning that the Governor could extend it again. If not though, he says it will expire, and interest and penalties will start to accrue.
In other news from the Lyon County Treasurer’s office, Hopp tells us that they have opened the courthouse, but the driver’s license and motor vehicle departments are operating by appointment only at this time to help with social distancing. Hopp says people actually like having appointments so that they know when to come, and it’s going very well.
He reminds us that drivers licenses can be renewed online every other time you renew them, and there are other forms available online that you can fill out and have ready when you come for your appointment, to limit your time in the office. He says you can also apply online for a six-month extension of your license if you don’t want to go to their office at this time due to the pandemic. You can call your local county treasurer’s office for more information.
