Sheldon Special Election Ballot Information

Sheldon, Iowa — The sample ballot for the May 21st Sheldon Special Election, along with Absentee Ballots, are now available.

The May 21st election is to choose mayor and an at-large council representative. The election was triggered by a petition presented to the City of Sheldon seeking an election to fill the mayor position. The city council had opted to fill the mayor’s chair by appointing someone to replace former mayor Katricia Meendering. The council appointed at-large councilman Greg Geels, who gave up his at-large council seat to serve as mayor.

The May 21st election will feature two mayoral candidates, Geels and Fred Grein, who are both seeking the mayor position. According to the O’Brien County Auditor’s Office, the winner of the May 21st special election will serve out the remainder of Meendering’s term, which ends on December 31, 2021.

Four individuals are seeking the at-large council position, with the winner serving until the term ends on December 31st of this year, and would, presumably, stand for reelection this November. The four seeking the post are Wayne Barahona, Wayne Burnette, Rick Nordahl and Kerwin Sterler. The individual who receives the most votes will be declared the winner once the election results are canvassed by the O’Brien County Board of Supervisors.

Sheldon residents can cast their ballots May 21st from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm at the Sheldon Community Services Center.
