Sanborn Fire Destroys Garage, Car

Sanborn, Iowa– A a garage and a car were destroyed in a fire on Friday, October 21, 2016 in Sanborn.Sanborn FD

According to Sanborn Fire Chief Randy Lyman, about 4:15 PM, the Sanborn Fire Department was called to the report of a garage fire with a car in the garage at the home of Doug Daggett at 206 West Fourth Street.

The chief says the fire department saw the car was totally engulfed inside the garage as they approached the scene, and the inside of the garage was just a fireball. He says they pulled the car out of the garage with a pickup and used water and foam to fight the fire.

He says a family member had just parked the 2000 Buick in the 24’x 24′ two-car garage and had come in the house, when smoke was noticed drifting past the window.

Lyman says no injuries were reported.

He says they asked for help from the Sheldon Fire Company but after Sanborn firefighters’ initial efforts to extinguish the fire were largely successful, they called off the Sheldon firefighters.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to have been something electrical in nature in the car.

Chief Lyman reports that both the unattached garage and the car were totaled. He says the vinyl siding on the east side of the house was melted, but there was no structural damage to the home.

He says they used 2,500 gallons of water to fight the fire, and crews were on scene for just over an hour.
