Schiebout Sentenced To 15 Years, Appeals Ruling

Orange City, Iowa — A Sioux Center woman, who was arrested after a standoff with police in November, has been sentenced to fifteen years in prison for theft. But she has appealed that conviction.

Sioux County Attorney Thomas G. Kunstle says that 39-year-old Kamie Jo Schiebout of Sioux Center was sentenced for the crime of Theft in the Second Degree as a Habitual Offender.

He says that on November 29, 2015, Sioux Center and Orange City police received reports that several books of blank checks had been stolen. Those checks began being issued to local businesses around Sioux County. Further investigation revealed Schiebout had stolen the checks and began using them to obtain goods and services in exchange.

Kunstle says Schiebout was sentenced to fifteen years in prison on the felony theft convictions. However, he says that before being taken into custody, Schiebout posted her appeal bond, staying her sentence pending her appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court. Such an appeal is expected to take approximately sixteen months, according to the county attorney.

Schiebout was arrested after a brief standoff with authorities on Tuesday, November 21st, three miles west of Sioux Center. Sioux County Sheriff’s deputies said that while they could see Schiebout inside the home, she refused to come to the door. Deputies say that after negotiations with the people inside the home failed, the Tri-County CERT Team made entry into the home and reportedly discovered Schiebout hiding under a pickup bed parked inside the garage of the home. Authorities say she was then arrested and booked into the Sioux County Jail.
