Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education met in special session Thursday evening, and approved the lease agreement with Children’s World.
The agreement sets the conditions for the school district to utilize classroom space at Children’s World for their preschool program. The terms of the lease agreement call for the Sheldon Community Schools to pay Children’s World one-thousand-dollars a month for rent of the classroom, with Children’s World paying for all utilities, including water, sewer, gas, heat, electricity, air conditioning, garbage disposal and trash disposal, with the school district being responsible for paying for phone service.

In other action, the Board approved a salary and benefit package for Classified & non-support staff, or more simply, any employee not considered administration or teacher. The Board voted for a three-percent pay increase for these personnel, and changed the way insurance benefits would be offered to those in this category. The law requires anyone who averages more than thirty-hours a week to be offered health insurance. In the past the District has audited the number of hours worked by each employee, and those who were working thirty or more hours would be offered health insurance. The problem arose when, during school late starts or snow days, these employees would work an average of less than thirty-hours, although they were scheduled for thirty-hours or more. During Thursday night’s meeting the Board voted to offer health insurance to anyone who is contracted to work thirty-hours per week or more, without regard to hours not worked through no fault of the employee. By taking that step the District also eliminated the need for employee hours to be audited each year.
The Board also approved the District’s implementation and participation in the Leader in Me program, which is a whole-school transformation model founded on the principals of Franklin Covey’s 7 habits designed to build leadership capacity and life skills in the District’s students.
Finally, the Board decided that the last day of school for students this school year will be Friday, May 31st.
