Scattered strong to severe storms are expected to impact parts of the region late this afternoon and tonight.
The greatest potential for severe storms will be west of De Smet to Lake Andes in the late afternoon and evening, with wind gusts to 70 mph, large hail up to 2 inch, and isolated tornadoes all possible. Storms are expected to weaken as they move east after sunset, though a few strong to severe storms with wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to quarter size may survive into and east of the I-29 corridor.
We’ll have a brief shot of increased heat and humidity ahead of storms today, but a more prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather is on tap for early next week, when heat indices could top 100 in some locations Sunday and Monday.
