Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met this week with Mayor Pro Tem Pete Hamill presiding.

In the open forum, they heard from Jason Van Meeteran, who is concerned about a tree near the sidewalk at 6th Avenue and 6th Street. The roots are heaving up the sidewalk. Public Works Director and interim co-City Manager Todd Uhl says the Public Works department will look into it.

The council approved the consent agenda.

They had the third reading and approval of the water and sewer ordinances, which change rates and make other changes.

The council set July 1st for a public hearing on an emergency services (non-TIF) bond.

They then discussed a proposal from Beck Engineering on the Pape land. It was mentioned that the Rec Trails Board would like a trail to be part of the plan. Councilman Jeff Wagner says he’s heard that people would like to know more about the Pape land as to a master plan before proceeding any further. A motion was made and was passed for phase one of the project, including a provision for a rec trail, which could be fleshed out or eliminated in the future. Wagner voted no.

The council also talked about property and casualty insurance. Uhl says the City staff recommends no changes to auto insurance, but recommends raising the deductible on property insurance from $1000 to $25,000, which would mean significant savings on premiums. Uhl reminded the council that wind and hail claims are separate and have a deductible of two percent of the building value. The council approved the change.
