Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in regular session at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in the council chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center.
The council approved the consent agenda, which contained several items.
They also approved ordinances to re-zone 331 North 5th Avenue and 415 West Park Street and a revised zoning map.
The council also had a discussion about recycling with Mark Gurtler from De Kruif Sanitation. Council member Ken Snyder says he’s concerned about recycling items blowing around town in the wind. He says there is a grant available to help buy receptacles that can be used for recycling items. Councilman Tom Eggers says he would like to use the money that they pay De Kruif for dumping the large city recycling container to buy individual residential containers. But Gertler says he doesn’t see the big city container going away. The council didn’t make any decisions except that they need to know all the costs and how many customers would need the new individual family recycling containers before proceeding.
The council approved a pay application for the Western Avenue project of very close to a half a million dollars.
The council also heard the City Park Master Plan from a representative of Beck Engineering, which includes a number of changes and improvements, including the replacement of the wooden play structure, the addition of soccer fields near the north side, a possible splash pad, and a possible dog park. You can hear the explanation of the plan when you check out the video of the meeting. Councilman Tom Eggers suggested a public forum for people to come and see what was being suggested and make comments. Mayor Greg Geels suggested that they find out from kids what they want as they will be major users of the park. The council decided to bring the matter up again during the first meeting in January.
