Sheldon College Student Interns With Grassley

Washington, DC — A Sheldon college student has just finished an internship with one of our US Senators in Washington.

According to Senator Chuck Grassley’s office, Trenton Hoekstra, son of Lance and Jennifer Hoekstra of Sheldon, just completed a four-week internship with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). Hoekstra is a junior at the University of South Dakota, majoring in Political Science and Criminal Justice.

Grassley says that interning in Washington, D.C., is one of the best ways to get a grasp on the inner workings of Capitol Hill and government. He says that interns play an important role in his office and fulfill meaningful tasks for Grassley and his staff. He says, “An internship is a unique opportunity for college-age students to be right in the middle of the political world and gather essential office experience.”

Hoekstra served as a legislative intern aiding Grassley’s policy and legislative staff. His duties included conducting legislative research, responding to constituent inquiries, attending committee hearings and briefings, and working on special projects for Legislative Assistants.

Hoekstra says, “Working in Senator Grassley’s office as a legislative intern allowed me to see firsthand the behind-the-scenes work that goes into serving Iowans. Not only did I assist in making sure Iowans knew their voices were being heard, but I was able to put together various projects for the legislative team. One highlight was writing a memo for a Senate Finance Committee hearing, then sitting in on the hearing while the Senator asked the experts questions I helped create.”
