Sheldon Firefighters Put New Fire Engine Into Service

Sheldon, Iowa — The newest addition to the Sheldon Fire Company fleet arrived December 8th, and was officially put into service Thursday (December 19th) night.

Sheldon 1st Assistant Fire Chief Brad Hindt says the new Fire Engine 4 is a 2019 Spartan Custom fire engine that is replacing the previous 20-year-old Engine 4.

The new Engine 4 has a 6-man cab, 1,500 gallon per minute pump with foam system, 1000-gallon water tank, 600 feet of 5-inch hose, 1200 feet of 2 ½-inch hose and 1000 Ft of 1¾-inch hose. The truck is equipped with all LED lighting with the latest safety features.

The new truck was built at Spartan in Brandon, South Dakota. Hindt says the planning of the truck started about 3 years ago, with the truck being ordered in November 2018.

Since the truck’s arrival in Sheldon, Hindt says the members of the fire company have been installing equipment and tools on the new engine 4.

The cost of the new Engine 4 was about $553,428.00, and Hindt says the Sheldon Fire Company would like to thank the Sheldon city leaders and community for their continued support in keeping the Fire Department and members safe with their investment in trucks and equipment.

Hindt says the 1999 Engine 4 will be offered for sale to another fire department.
