Sheldon Kwik Star Months Away, But Local Hiring Happening Now

Sheldon, Iowa — Construction has yet to begin on the new Kwik Star store that is to be built on the site of the former Shopko location, but hiring of staff for the new store has begun.

Dane Hanson has been named the manager of Sheldon’s Kwik Star, and he says the company tries to get their leaders into a community before the store is scheduled to open.

(As above) “Right now I’m actually settled in here on 9th Street in Sheldon, right next to the travelling center. We try to get our leaders in place about six months beforehand, that way we can kind of get our feet wet in the town, try to see what the town’s like, and try to get our team hired on board. And why I’m here on main street is because we’ve actually rented out an office space and we will be doing interviewing and our early training.”

He tells us about the training new team members experience.

(As above) “Our early training sessions… so our computer training, the first three of four days of your training will be done here. And after that we ship them out to a live store and they get a lot of in-person training beforehand. Then when our store opens up we just bring them back.”

Hanson says there are a couple of ways you can apply to be a team member at Sheldon’s Kwik Star.

(As above) “They can always come down to my location here, on 9th Street…it’s actually 310 9th Street…they can come in here and I can talk to them in person, otherwise they can go to kwiktrip.jobs. When they go to that website they just have to search either ‘Sheldon’, or my store, which is 1154. We’re hiring for really any position. Not only do we need regular coworkers, we need our kitchen leaders and our shift leaders, as well, on the floor. The other thing that we do have going on right now is there’s a $500 sign-on bonus, as well. So if people come in and they interview, they do well and I hire them, after their ninety day appraisal, which is their first appraisal that they get, they would also get a $500 sign-on bonus with that.”

He says the store is scheduled to open in early November of this year, and he tells us that once construction begins, it doesn’t take long to complete.

(As above) “Once the construction guys get out here it will go very quickly. It’s surprising how quickly those guys go up, but the stores go up in about four months.”

Hanson says wages start at $12.20 per hour and go up from there, depending upon the position you’re hired to fill, as well as qualifications and experience, and they are also  offering the $500 sign-on bonus.
