The Sheldon Police Department reports that about 4:00 PM on Monday, September 26, 2016, 42-year-old Richard Van Beek of Sheldon was driving a 2012 Ford pickup southbound in the Sudbeck Trucking lot. Eighty-nine year-old John Bilsland of Sheldon was westbound on 16th Street in a 1999 Dodge.

The report says that it appeared as if Van Beek was not going to stop before entering 16th Street. It says Bilsland steered right to avoid a collision, but did not apply his brakes, assuming Van Beek was going to continue. The Bilsland Dodge hit Van Beek’s pickup as it was partially in the traveled portion of the westbound lane.

The Sheldon Community Ambulance Team took Bilsland to Sanford Sheldon Hospital. He was later transferred to Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, where he died. Van Beek reported no injuries.

Both vehicles were totaled with Van Beek’s Ford pickup receiving $25,000 in damages, and Bilsland’s Dodge receiving $4000 in damages.

Van Beek was charged with unsafe entry into roadway.

The Sheldon Fire Company, SCAT, and the Sheldon EMA assisted at the scene.
