Sheldon Mayor Gives More Info On Sheldon 4 Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — Since Friday afternoon we’ve been telling you about the Sheldon 4 Sheldon relief effort, in which Sheldon IA has “adopted” Sheldon, Texas, a suburb of Houston that was hard hit by Hurricane Harvey.  Now, Sheldon (IA) Mayor Katricia Meendering give us more information.

Meendering says the City of Sheldon wanted to do SOMETHING, but she had no idea what.

She says once the idea was hatched to “adopt” Sheldon TX, City Manager Sean Hutchison reached out to contacts in Crockett TX, and the plan came together from there.

The Mayor talks about where to find lists of items needed by our Sheldon, Texas friends.

Meendering says that if you wish to donate clothing, please “be wise in what you’re giving.”

She said that, in addition to donations for the items so desperately needed in Texas, donations to pay for the fuel to get it there are also needed.

Meendering says a gentlemen stopped at her house shortly after the end of last Friday’s press conference, telling her that he had rounded up a full truckload of bottled water.  Rick Holtrop is scheduled to leave Sheldon with that load this weekend, bound for Sheldon TX.

Mayor Meendering made her comments on Wednesday morning’s KIWA Morning Show with Wayne & Aaron.  Later Wednesday morning, Rick Holtrop, the man who has volunteered to drive the donated items to Sheldon TX, stopped at the KIWA Studios.  As he was leaving, a gentleman stopped and handed him a cash donation to help defray fuel costs.

Both Hy-Vee and Fareway in Sheldon have lists of the relief items needed, and are offering the items at reduced prices.  To see the Hy-Vee relief supplies price list, please CLICK HERE.  For the Fareway relief supplies price list, please CLICK HERE.

If you’d prefer to make a monetary donation to help with the recovery effort, you can make a check payable to “Sheldon ISD Education Foundation”, and be sure to put “Harvey Relief” on the memo line of your check.  Donations can be dropped off at the Sheldon (IA) City Office.

In many parts of this country, stories like this would be unheard of.  But this is Sheldon, Iowa, and it’s just what we do to help others in need.
