Sheldon, Iowa — The City of Sheldon is reminding their residents that their sump pumps should not be connected to the sanitary sewer. That is, your sump pump should not be draining to the same system that drains your sinks, toilets, and washing machine.
According to Sheldon Public Works Director Todd Uhl, with the recent rains, flows in the sanitary sewer system have increased substantially. He says the system is starting to show signs of stress and that increases the possibility of sewer backups. Uhl tells us you can help reduce this risk for yourself, your neighbors, and the city by making sure that your sump pumps are NOT discharging into the sanitary sewer system.
The Sheldon City Code says you may not “connect a roof downspout, sump pump, exterior foundation drain, areaway drain, or other source of surface run-off or groundwater to a building sewer or building drain that is connected directly or indirectly to a public sanitary sewer.”
