Sheldon School Board Approves 24-25 Calendar, Bid For Dirt Work Bonds

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education met on Wednesday in regular session.

Superintendent Cory Myer gives us the highlights of the meeting.

Myer tells us they accepted bids on the sale of bonds to finance the upcoming construction project.

Myer tells us more.

Myer says the bids for the bonds were the only thing voted on. He says as far as construction, they are still in the design phase and hope to put it out for bids in May or June, with work hoped to start with a groundbreaking in mid-to-late July. He says the May or June bid will be just for the dirt work, with the rest of the project to be bid later. He says they hope walls will start going up in October or November of this year.

Myer gives us some information about the 2024-25 calendar that they approved.

Again, that’s May 22nd, 2025 — for the earliest possible end date NEXT school year. He tells us it used to be popular to build snow make-up days into the calendar that could be used as school days if they had to. But he says people schedule to be out of town or schedule appointments on those days and then they have attendance issues if they have to use those days, so they didn’t do that.

Mr. Myer says they also decided at the meeting to give their hourly staff a raise.

He says the starting wage of $14.50 per hour for Sheldon Community School District employees will now by $16.50 per hour.
