Another Northwest Iowa Roundabout Planned; DOT Taking Comments

Marcus, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Transportation is taking input from the public on a proposed roundabout in Cherokee County.

The roundabout would be installed at the Highway 3/Highway 143 intersection near Marcus.

As far as the construction project, which is not set to begin until spring of 2026, according to a DOT news release, Highway 3 traffic will be maintained by staging construction for most of the project. The DOT anticipates that Highway 3 east of Highway 143 will need to be detoured during the final stage of construction. The proposed detour would be Cherokee County roads L36, C38, and L40.

Highway 143 and L36 will be detoured for part of construction. When Highway 143 is closed, drivers will be directed to L22, C16, and L40. When L36 is closed, drivers will be directed to use L22, C38, and L40.

The DOT hopes the project will be complete by early in the fall of 2026.

A virtual presentation is available on the Iowa DOT website until Friday, April 19th, which is when comments are due. More information is also available on the DOT website.
